Belarus restricts import of used cars

6 апреля 2015

Vehicles older than 2007 must now comply with the fourth or higher environmental class. These are the rules of the Customs Union. Belarus, by the way, was the last among the three member countries of the EAEC to introduce this rule.

By Yuri Tabolin: Kazakhstan and Russia adopted new technical regulations on January, 1. Belarus adopts them later. According to the existing regulations, newly imported cars older than 2007 must comply with a number of requirements.

Among the demands is not only the environmental class, but also the availability of ABS, at least one front airbag, Isofix attachment points for child safety seats. In short, these are the features of modern cars, which do not only deliver a person from point A to point B, but also make the trip safe.

By the way, environmental class limits shall not apply to vehicles imported from the Member States of EAEU. Those who want to buy an old car, for example, from Europe or the US, will have to pass examination. On the basis of the relevant documents from the seller it will be possible to confirm compliance with the fourth environmental class. Gosstandard assures that the process will not be complex or lengthy. The main stage is the documentary check on the producer’s database.

The cost of such a procedure has not been determined yet, but the authorities promise to set the minimum payment, so as to avoid significant additional costs.

From July, 1, 2016, environmental and technical requirements will be obligatory for all used cars imported into the country.
