The audience was about 4,500 people. The first live broadcasts were organized with the help of mobile stations in 1957. In the late 50s the first domestic documentaries and TV plays were produced. In the 70s the Belarusian television became a major news source for the populace.
In August 1994 the Belarusian President initiated the foundation of the National State TV and Radio Company of Belarus with new technologies and broadcasting policy. The First National TV Channel was founded in 2000, TV channel “LAD” in 2003, and satellite TV channel “Belarus TV” in 2005.
Due to broadcasting the programs through Intelsat 904 satellite "Belarus-TV" is available 17 hours a day in such countries as Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Australia, Georgia, Armenia and Uzbekistan.
The channel “Belarus-TV” is accessible for 140 towns of the former USSR, including 35 in Russia. Its audience is about 5.5 million people. The Russians make 66% of that number, residents of Baltic State 14%, audience of Ukraine 10%, Moldova 8% and TV viewers of other countries 2%. The residents of Pridnestrovie in the town of Bendery can watch the channel live.
Since February 17 the live programs of “Belarus-TV” are available in the Internet, on the site of Belteleradiocompany www.tvr.by. 45 000 people watched the channel in the Web in November 2005 alone. The Belarusian television arouses the greatest interest in the USA, Israel, Germany, Russia, Canada and UK.
The channel presents news, analytical programs, social and political projects, documentaries, history and culture of the Belarusian people, sport, entertainment and children’s programs. The films it shows are presented by Belteleradiocompany, Second National Channel, Capital Television, national studio Belarusfilm and Belarusian Video Center.
Such programs as "Slavonic Bazaar in Vitebsk", "Good Morning, Belarus!", "In our House, in our Hut", "Slavonic Project", "Golden Section", "My land, Belarus", "Belarus in Personalities", movies and documentaries are broadcasted by the channel.
According to the Belarusian and Russian polls “Belarus-TV” entered the A-20 list of the best TV-channels in the regions, where it is included in the packages of cable networks. According to the information of uncommercial partnership “Media Committees” “Belarus-TV” ranks 15-17th in terms of daily engulfment of the audience, being ahead of such channels as TV-3, 7 TV and little behind TVC. About 80% of respondents speak positive of the channel’s programs.
Launch of “Belarus-TV” was announced an event of the year at the 8th Eurasian TV Forum, held in Moscow November 9-13. Belteleradiocompany was awarded by a diploma and a memory medal for creation of common information space in Eurasia.
February 1 is the first anniversary of international satellite TV-channel “Belarus-TV”. During the first years of its existence the channel gained popularity in many countries and was awarded by rewards and diplomas. More than 500 information materials, spread in the media, were dedicated to the channel.
On its birthday the channel is going to shift to around-the-clock broadcast, which will help to expand its audience. The expansion of “Belarus-TV” to more cable networks and cooperation with broadcasters and cable operators in Russia and other states will be continued.
