By Sergei Khamentovsky: The peoples of the Soviet Union and China suffered most during World War II which claimed the lives of every third Belarusian citizen and affected every Chinese family.

During his official visit to Belarus, Xi Jinping laid a wreath at the Victory Monument and visited the Great Patriotic War Museum at the invitation of his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. The contribution of the Belarusian people to the Great Victory produced an unforgettable impression on the distinguished guest, who left an entry in the Museum’s guest book.

Only 15 Belarusians survived out of hundreds who fought in the Far East front during World War II. The veterans received Medals of Peace from the Chinese President at a solemn ceremony.

Now the two peoples are allies not only in politics and economy, but also in the fight against the falsification of military history. Attempts to rewrite the history of the Asian battle ground are insulting to China.

China is going to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory over fascism on 3 September. It is part of the country’s struggle for historical truth and an attempt to emphasise the importance of its role in the events of those years. After all, China fought in the Eastern Front for eight years and lost 35 million people in the war.
