World’s development discussed at UN General Assembly

By Olga Makei: The general debate has been going on for the second day, featuring the Presidents of Belarus, Brazil, China, France, Russia and the US. The meeting was opened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who spoke about the Syrian crisis and urged to address this issue in the International Criminal Court. The UN Secretary-General drew the attention of the EU countries to the problem of refugees, condemning some European states for constructing barriers at the borders.

President Alexander Lukashenko expressed Belarus’ stance in the context of global problems. Despite obvious achievements, human civilisation has not reached a breakthrough, as the world is overwhelmed by new challenges and threats. An important challenge, which, according to Alexander Lukashenko, the international community is facing, is global economic threats. Today, it does not take to be a financial analyst to understand the redivision of the market, sanctions or currency wars. All of those are the world's escalating diseases, the cure to which could be the integration of integrations.

Another set of global threats are those relating to the humanitarian and social spheres. The cult of individual rights and freedoms victimizes the family and even the state, when under the guise of human rights slogans governments are overthrown and wars for resources are conducted. A solution to the modern-day problems, the President believes, is originally laid out in the UN Charter. Wars can not be a tool of international relations, the politician stressed.

Belarus is not an extra at the UN Summit. 70 years ago, Belarus was among the founders of the United Nations organisation, signing the UN Charter, the first paragraph of which calls for maintaining international peace and security. The goal of the official Minsk is to turn this idea into real action. Belarus is trying to do its best to become the example of a platform for settling the Ukrainian crisis.

Alexander Lukashenko held about ten meetings and an extensive set of short talks in New York with the UN Secretary-General and the Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as with the leaders of Cuba, Ecuador and Egypt.

As stated by Egypt’s Investment Minister Ashraf Salman, Belarus is an important partner for Egypt as the country is pursuing a policy aimed at improving relations with European countries. Accordingly, Egypt is interested in expanding trade and investment cooperation with Belarus and is currently studying mutual investment possibilities.

President Alexander Lukashenko also met with his Austrian counterpart to discuss bilateral cooperation. Heinz Fischer thanked the Belarusian leader for commemorating World War II victims, highlighting the opening of the Trostenets memorial. In turn, Alexander Lukashenko invited the Austrian President to pay a visit to Belarus.

The Belarusian Foreign Minister met with the representatives of the United States Department of State and European politicians. Belarus has now real chances to restart relations with the US and the EU, Vladimir Makei noted.
