World Day to Combat Human Trafficking

30 июля 2015

In 2005 at UN Summit in New York the President of Belarus suggested making July, 30, a memorable date. The international community supported the initiative. In December 2013 the General Assembly adopted a resolution according to which all countries gather at the round table on July, 30, and summarize the work aimed at eradication of slavery, coercion and social inequality.

Today, 10 years after the historic summit, the problem of human trafficking is not eliminated. The international community is still struggling with the scourge. Yesterday Minsk hosted an event where experts summed up the work for the eradication of slavery and worked out further steps to combat human trafficking.

Renate Held, Director of the Regional Office for South-East Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia: "No country can solve this problem alone. It is only through joint efforts. I would like to note the commitment of Belarus and its government to solve this problem."

Representatives of 16 countries, as well as experts from authoritative international organizations and NGOs shared their experiences. Overall, the Group of Friends, established in the United Nations at the initiative of Belarus, includes 22 countries. All of them actively support the position of the Belarusian side.

The strength of the Belarusian barrier that combats with human trafficking is appreciated throughout the world. Therefore, in 2010 the United Nations adopted the Global Plan of Action proposed by our country.

And five years earlier, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko called for all countries to join efforts in the fight against the slave trade. For his part, the head of state assured that Belarus intends to continue to be at the forefront of this struggle.
