A project on the safe storage and repair of small arms was presented at a military unit in Gomel. The OSCE and the European Union allocated more than 3 million dollars to finance the project the main objective of which is to raise the level of weapon safety on the country’s territory and strengthen citizen security guarantees. In this respect Belarus can serve as an example to follow, project participants believe.

Sanaka Samarasinha, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus: “I was really impressed by what I saw. Everything is organised systematically, in accordance with the best European standards. Currently, we have already equipped eight sites and work is underway to raise funds for the other five. The most important thing is to share knowledge, modern technologies and provide training opportunities for staff. The project’s main result is a constructive cooperation between the United Nations, the European Union and the Government of the Republic of Belarus. This positive experience should be continued.”

The Belarusian side has developed the project’s software and is ready to share it with other countries. Interest has already been expressed by Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Defence.
