175 countries have signed the Paris Agreement to combat climate change, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. The ceremony took place in the hall of the UN General Assembly in New York on Earth Day. According to the document, the heads of state have committed to prevent the increase in the average temperature of the atmosphere by more than 2 degrees by the year 2100.

From Belarus’ side the agreement was signed by Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei. The diplomat briefed the participants of the ceremony on the national plan programme on limiting greenhouse gas emissions and Belarus’ proposals on further global actions on climate. According to the document, developed countries will allocate 100 billion dollars to develop low-carbon hydrogen energy sources, the use of which should have a positive impact on the planet’s climate. This colossal amount may be increased in ten years’ time.
