By Natalia Tarasyuk: A new Belarusian-Russian remote sensing satellite can enter orbit as early as 2020, as announced at today’s meeting between scientists of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences and Roscosmos corporation top managers in Minsk. The experts not only discussed the technical and financial issues of creating the satellite, but also summed up the five-year operation period of the Belarusian Satellite.

The Belarusian Satellite was launched from Baikonur on July 22, 2012 at 09:41 Minsk time. It is operating together with the Russian satellite Kanopus-V.

Belarus' income from selling the captured images and exporting equipment and technologies worth 8 million dollars has already exceeded the costs. The joint group will continue cooperating by creating a new spacecraft.

Belarus is not only working on the new satellite, but is already preparing for the VII Belarusian Space Congress. The event, scheduled for late October, is expected to feature about 150 cosmonauts and accompanying persons.

According to Russia's plans, by 2020 the new group will have included at least 15 Earth remote sensing satellites to be joined by the satellite that is currently being developed.

The new Russian-Belarussian remote sensing satellite is planned to be launched in 2020 or 2021. It will have a higher resolution and weigh about 950 kilograms. According to preliminary estimates, it will cost 180 million dollars.
